What is the one thing that professional sports people do regularly that you can take advantage of? Simply, every Monday after their performance, they review, what did they do right? What did they do wrong? What can they change? What can they improve?

If you’re just reviewing your business, your organisation once a year or twice a year, in this fast paced world, that’s not often enough. You’ve got to be able to capture what you’re doing right and repeat it. You’ve got to be able to capture what you’re not doing so well, improve on it and that’s done with proper review.

Most high performance sports happens over the weekend, around about then. First thing they do on Monday, is review what they did. In business, first thing you do on Monday morning is you go straight into business again.

How can you improve your business if you’re not looking at the things to improve and the things you’re doing well and capturing both of them?

As some of you might be aware, I’m on the board of the Essen Football Club in the AFL. It’s a team I played for a long time ago and even now, back then and even now, I see how a league club reviews constantly about their performance.

Each week, they look at how they can improve from the week before. I think this is really important in the modern business world. Far too often we spend too much time in between reviews and not really looking at what’s important.

Sometimes we measure our sales results by looking at last months sales figures. That’s like driving your car and looking in the rear view mirror all the time.  If you’re looking at objectively that way, we’re actually finding the right things to improve on.
