Many leagues and organisations ask me, “Why aren’t my people performing to the expectations we have for them?” After the break, I’ll give you three keys on how you can get your people to perform to their best.

So, three things about how you can get your people to be high performance. Firstly, they have to understand what their role is. It has to be really clear about the role. Sometimes it’s a little bit fuzzy for people and they don’t understand what their job is.

Secondly, they really have to understand what that role entails, so what do they have to do? What they have to do at time, what they have the reach for within that role. If you get that cleared, that’s the second step. You’re on your way.

And the third one is really important more and more these days is do you coach them into that role? Do you actually make sure they understand that it’s okay to make a mistake. Come back and talk to somebody who can help them and direct them in the right way.

Recently, I was working with a company who had a new, young, female manager and had never done the role before, had been involved in the company but had never been done before. They engaged me to make sure that she was really clear about what her role was, really good about what the responsibilities went with that role, and how to direct those responsibilities and do those responsibilities.

I coached her into that role. So we regularly met over time. She asked questions, I asked questions, and we actually shaped what she had to do and she was much better off for it. She was much more confident that role, she could direct the people more positively and confidently. She was more productive, her people were more productive and the company made more money.

That three points are really, really important. Get their role really clear, make sure they understand what the direction the role takes, and then coaching the person into that role.
